Handmade Traditional Xinjiang Uyghur Ghijek / Violin

The word tambur comes from the Arabic 'tunbur', and it is widely believed that this comes from the Sumerian word 'pantur', a semispherical stringed instrument with a long stem. Another view is that it comes from the words (tabla, tabl, tabul etc.) for percussion instruments that have been used since the very earliest times. There is mention in the Hittite civilization of a stringed instrument called a 'TIBULA'. It is generally agreed that this was in all probability a long-stemmed stringed instrument. Texts from those times reveal that it was used to accompany the spoken word and dancing.

Handmade Traditional Xinjiang Uyghur Dutar / Long Necked Lute

The dutar is a two string pear-shaped long-necked lute from western China, played by the Uighur and Uzbek people of Xinjiang Province. Although western ethnomusicologists state that these instruments came from the Persian dutar or dotar (originally a two-string instrument but now with four strings), the Uyghur people say that the Persian instrument descended from theirs.

Dutar can be found in almost every Uyghur home. It is used for family members to sing songs together, as well as the very first musical instrument for young Uyghurs to learn. Music plays an important role for Uyghurs¡¯ life, and dutar is an essential instrument that all Uyghurs, both male and female, can play it well.
